I can't believe I attended my very first ASL camp. 😃 I'm seriously at a loss for words because, let me tell you, I was so nervous to embark on this adventure all by myself, and my knowledge of American Sign Language (ASL) was pretty limited. But hey, they say life begins at the end of your comfort zone, right? So, off I go! 🌟
This turned out to be the best decision I've ever made. 💪 Let me take you on a journey through my ASL camp experience.
Picture this: I arrive at the campsite, completely clueless about ASL signs. I had to ask someone where to park my car. 🚗 The person signed to me and showed me how to ask. All I knew was thank you, your welcome, and my name. It was like stepping into a whole new world, and I couldn't speak a word. 😶 Yes, you heard me right - we weren't allowed to use our voices at all during the camp! Crazy, right? 🤐
But here's the crazy part - I managed to navigate the entire experience with just my newfound sign language skills. It was surreal! 🤯 Surrounded by a bunch of incredible people, I quickly learned how to communicate with ASL. 🚀
And guess what? The folks I was mingling with were all at level 2 and level 3 ASL, having conversations left and right. It was mind-blowing to see them effortlessly chat away, and I was determined to catch up. 💪 But one thing I want to state is that don't be afraid to stop people so that you can catch up with the sign. Because it can be overwhelming. I am so thankful that everyone was willing to stop the conversation to explain. 🤗
The best part of it all? These wonderful people were not only incredibly patient but also eager to help me learn. They cheered me on, corrected my signs, and shared their experiences. It felt like one big, supportive ASL family. 👏 The drive to the camper's cottage, the late-night sign language practice, and the drive to Parry Sound Downtown to explore the town – it was all part of this immersive ASL experience that was simply unforgettable. 🏡🌃
I can honestly say I'm honored to have met so many incredible individuals who inspired me to learn ASL and who were just as excited to teach me as I was to learn. It was like an ASL wonderland, and I can't recommend it enough! If you've ever considered attending an ASL camp, don't hesitate. Take the plunge and dive into this amazing world of communication, community, and connection. It's an adventure you won't regret, I promise! 🤩
FYI: I AM GOING TO BE SIGNING UP FOR ASL COURSES IN THE NEW YEAR & GOING BACK!! 📆✍️
